Self-publishing editing checklist (from draft to upload)

A practical self-publishing editing checklist: self-revision, beta readers, developmental work, copyedit, format, proof, and launch quality control.

1. Finish a real draft

Complete manuscript. Not a perfect manuscript—complete.

2. Cooling period

Two weeks minimum if you can spare it. Fresh eyes start at home.

3. Self-revision pass

  • Read for structure only (no comma hunting)
  • Read aloud for voice and rhythm
  • Build a series bible / continuity sheet

4. Beta readers

3–8 readers who finish books in your genre. Specific questions beat “any thoughts?” See the beta readers guide.

5. Professional big-picture help

Critique or developmental edit. Revise again.

6. Copyedit

Lock content first. Then language.

7. Formatting

Ebook + print interiors after content freeze.

8. Proofread

Final error hunt on near-final files.

9. Upload QC

  • Check front matter, ISBN/ASIN details, categories, keywords
  • Download proof files from the store and flip every chapter break
  • Verify cover wrap and ebook thumbnail readability
Polar Bear sequence: self → beta → developmental/critique → revise → copy → format → proof → publish.
