Hire a developmental editor when
- You finished a complete draft and revised it hard yourself
- Beta readers agree on big issues (or contradict in ways you cannot resolve)
- You are too close to the book to see structure clearly
Hire a copyeditor when
- Plot/argument is stable—you are not planning major scene surgery
- You want a professional language pass before formatting or agent submission
Hire a proofreader when
- Copyedit is done and revisions from that pass are implemented
- Preferably after interior layout for print/ebook
Ways to start smaller
First-five-pages or sample chapter reviews test chemistry. A manuscript critique is ideal when you need direction more than full markup.
